A WDW Expert goes to Disneyland

I’ve been going to Walt Disney World for two decades now. Many have been going longer, but I was a “late bloomer” as I’ve probably mentioned before. And being the technical, analytical person I am, I learned a great deal by studying – we bought books, joined the DISboards, etc. Because the Fastpass system was so important for being able to enjoy more and wait list, I made a point of studying it, how it work, WHY it worked, and knowing how best to use it. I was dubbed the “Fastpass Jedi Master” over at the DISboards. In general, I consider myself an expert on most everything WDW.

This time I was out of my element. THIS time, I was going to Disneyland. I was going to where it all began. And I wanted a first-timers view. So much so, we went to the parks without even a touring plan. We had our must-dos, our would-like-to-dos, and even some don’t-really-need-to-dos – we knew we wouldn’t be able to do everything, and some attractions are carbon copies of those in WDW. We wanted to do the different things most – even those that were only slightly different in a way.

It looks familiar so far…
My passion for nostalgia is pretty high, so seeing the things I’ve only seen on TV, via re-runs of the old “Disneyland/World of Color”, and walking where Walt once walked, was going to be the excitement for me. So obviously, our first day would be spent in Disneyland Park.

Trip report – Saratoga Springs, Holidays and Harry Potter (December 2010)

[This is a trip report from December 2010, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Day 1 – Arrival, Animal Kingdom

This was a larger family trip – my in-laws would be joining us, and we had a 2 bedroom villa booked at Saratoga Springs. Even though this is a holiday time trip, we decided to skip the Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party this time, as we felt the crowd levels were far to high from our 2007 trip to warrant the expense, and we instead wanted to spend a day at Universal’s Islands of Adventure to see the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Trip Report – Syfy Digital Press panels, Mythos Restaurant, Wizarding World of Harry Potter

[This is a trip report from October 2010, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Day 1 – Arrival, Food and Wine, Bice Restaurant, Halloween Horror Nights

This was an unexpected trip. I got invited to the Syfy Digital Press Tour event in Orlando (via one of my other sites, the SF news site Sci-Fi Storm, which was about to have its 10th anniversary) a few weeks before. I’ve been invited to them in the past, but the lead time was often insufficient to make arrangements, and they were often more remote – but Orlando I could do, especially since I can stay on DVC points or get a cheap room down at Disney, so I jumped at the chance.

Trip Report – Pop Century, Star Wars Weekends (June 2009)

[This is a trip report from June 2009, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Introduction and Travel

This was a somewhat impromptu trip. Thanks to JetBlue and their charge card, we had a free flight. The unfortunate part of the TrueBlue program is that as soon as you earn sufficient points, they issue you a certificate for a free flight – that expires in 12 months. You can’t save them up (Edit: This has since changed). So we had a free flight we needed to use, with no plans to go to Disney for over 18 months (out of DVC points).

Trip Report – Animal Kingdom Lodge, Port Orleans Riverside, Flower and Garden Festival (April 2009)

[This is a trip report from April 2009, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Introduction and Travel

April 19-27, 2009

We had been to Disney during the Flower And Garden Festival once before, in 1999. We remembered how nice everything looked and were eager to see it again, although it wasn’t totally a focus of this trip, like with Food & Wine. We planned to just do everything we wanted, especially now that DD#2 was tall enough to ride everything but Rock’n’Roller Coaster. Unfortunately, Space Mountain would be closed for rehab – starting the day we arrived. And since this is our last full trip for a while, she will have to wait.

Trip Report – Beach Club Villas, Food & Wine Festival (October 2008)

[This is a trip report from October 2008, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Introduction and Travel

October 4-8, 2008

This was going to be our first ever Food and Wine Festival trip. Although we are not really wine drinkers, we have been looking to try some new foods – and getting our kids to try some too (they can’t have chicken nuggets every meal!) DD#1, who is now 8, agreed that she would try new foods as well.

Trip Report – Saratoga Springs (December 2007)

[This is a trip report from December 2007, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Introduction and Travel

December 1-8, 2007

As always, I may use abbreviations that you may not be familiar with, like SSR for Saratoga Springs Resort, or DW for “Dear (or Disney) Wife”, etc. Here is a reference list if you need it.

This trip report may not be as detailed as the previous one…I didn’t take notes each day (relying on memory and pictures), and Mothering I’ve since gotten lazy, not completing it for quite a while, so the memory may have faded in areas.

Trip Report – Beach Club Villas (July 2007)

[This is a trip report from July 2007, being included as a new post as part of the site redesign]

Introduction

To put this trip in perspective, this was an adult-oriented trip. DW and I first traveled to Walt Disney World almost 10 years to the day of this trip (it was the first time for either of us), and we decided as an early 10th Anniversary trip (our actual wedding anniversary is just after Christmas) it would just be the two of us, on our first trip as DVC members. Don’t worry…we are taking the kids (and the grandparents who put up with them for 5 days) in the first week of December for an even longer time for our first Disney Christmas.
